Retaining Wall Installation in La Crosse, WI

Project Overview

We recently completed a retaining wall project for a customer in La Crosse, WI. The existing retaining wall had shifted and pushed forward over the years. Over time, poor drainage behind the wall became a major cause of the problem. Water had been collecting behind the wall without a proper drainage system. During excavation, we discovered there was no drainage rock behind the existing wall. In addition, there was no drain tile to move water away from the structure.

Preparing the Foundation

To begin, we carefully excavated the lower portion of the existing wall. Proper drainage is essential for any strong and long-lasting retaining wall installation. Without proper drainage, water can create pressure against the wall. As a result, that pressure can cause retaining walls to shift, bow, or fail over time.

Next, our team prepared a solid and compacted rock base. The new base provided proper support for the first course of FORIX retaining wall blocks. Therefore, creating a strong foundation was an important part of this retaining wall project.

Installing Drainage

After preparing the foundation, we installed a complete drainage system behind the new wall. This system included clean drainage rock, drain tile, and landscape fabric. First, the drainage rock allows water to move freely behind the retaining wall. Then, the drain tile helps direct water away from the wall and surrounding area. Additionally, landscape fabric helps prevent soil from moving into the drainage system.

Each block was backfilled with a minimum of 12 inches of clean drainage stone. As a result, this creates an effective drainage zone behind the entire retaining wall. Proper backfilling helps reduce water pressure against the wall. Where it provides additional support and stability for the retaining wall system.

Building for Stability

Throughout the installation, we took extra care to compact the material properly. This process helps create a stronger wall with improved long-term stability. By properly preparing the base and installing the drainage system, we were able to address the issues that caused the original wall to move.

Most importantly, our goal was to build a retaining wall that could handle changing conditions. Proper drainage was a major priority throughout the entire La Crosse retaining wall project. We wanted to address the original problems before installing the new wall. By fixing the drainage first, we can help reduce the risk of future wall movement. At the same time, proper drainage helps protect the surrounding landscape from water-related issues.

Final Results

A properly installed retaining wall can provide both function and visual appeal. In addition, retaining walls can help control slopes and improve usable outdoor space. If you need retaining wall installation in La Crosse, WI, proper drainage matters. For this reason, our team focuses on building durable retaining walls with strong foundations and effective drainage.
